As the Summer draws to a close and the shops start to stock Halloween and Christmas paraphernalia, we thought we would take a look back on the last few months here at Alliance Consulting. We were delighted to attend the SME Business Awards at the end of June as a Finalist under the Outstanding Customer Service category. It was a glittering affair at the Bedford Corn Exchange, one which our Managing Director, Maria attended on crutches further to her total hip replacement the week before! We didn't win (our very worthy opponent was a dog grooming business) but we had a wonderful evening rubbing shoulders with some of Bedford's finest business minds. Having joined the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce earlier this year, we have been venturing into the world of networking and have attended various events so far including the summer reception at Marston Forest Centre and a number of coffee mornings and afternoons. We've had the opportunity to meet with some great people and businesses developing new local business relationships. After a quiet few months, a feeling echoed universally amongst our business community, we are pleased to report that hiring is most definitely on the up again and we are now working on multiple vacancies in the UK, Europe and the US. How are we coping with the additional work you ask? Meet Geoff, our newest employee. He looks forward to taking your calls!
Dearest gentle candidates and clients This Cyber Security Sales Recruiter writes to inform you that she will be taking a short break from #hiring for vacancies in the #engineering and #networksecurity worlds. Sadly, she will not be promenading or taking a vacation somewhere exotic, she has had her left hip replaced further to suffering through several years crippled by osteo arthritis. Whilst she recovers wearing a hospital gown, surely the likes of which will leave our revered modiste recoiling in disgust, please liaise with her esteemed colleagues at Alliance Consulting (Recruitment) for all your requirements Yours truly Lady Mazzei, who will publish her return date in her next society paper, or rather Linked In post

Alliance Consulting has recently partnered with Cainhoe Wood Golf Club, an inclusive and family-friendly golf club on a beautiful site in Central Bedfordshire. With two mature 18 hole courses, an open practice ground and a 25 bay 300+ yard driving range, they have the facilities to cater for all ability levels. As we come into the summer months (well technically speaking anyway!) we are pleased to be able to offer a complimentary round of golf for four at Cainhoe Golf Club for clients in Bedfordshire, or any other of more than 100 associated golf clubs in England for clients based further afield. Clients engaging with Alliance Consulting to discuss their Engineering recruitment and who subsequently make a successful hire will be able to redeem their offer code with the club of their choice. We were delighted to receive our certificate last week confirming our admittance to the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce and we are looking forward to attending our first event this week at the annual members summer reception at the Marston Forest Centre. Having been announced as a Finalist two months ago for the SME Bedfordshire Business Awards, joining the Chamber seemed like a natural next step for us. Why be alone when the Chamber means that we can be part of a wider business community with a strong belief that "business is done better together"" Alliance Consulting has been delivering world class talent to the Engineering sector since 2003 and whilst we started locally, we have since gone on to achieve a very pleasing international footprint in the world of Engineering recruitment. Whilst we are immensely proud of these achievements and that in 2023, 30% of our revenue was achieved through overseas placements, we will not forget our roots and continue to partner locally whenever possible. Our team, looks forward to discussing your roles in Engineering, Technology, Manufacturing or Sales and Marketing
A quieter end this year to Quarter 2 so I have been busy working further on business strategy until the next tsunami of vacancies arrives! So, how do Recruiters busy themselves when they have filled all their vacancies? ..... They go networking :) Given that we have been short listed as finalists in the SME Bedfordshire Awards 2024, I took the opportunity for Alliance Consulting to join the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce. We are looking forward to getting to know some of our fellow members at the summer reception barbeque next week and at the Awards night on the 4th July. Eeeek, I still haven't bought a new dress! Dan and I also decided to visit Birmingham last week to attend the Smart Manufacturing and Engineering Week exhibition. It was a great opportunity to meet up with clients we have worked with previously and also foster some new relationships as well. We look forward to visiting the NEC again later this year for the PPMA show. On a personal note, I am gearing up for a total hip replacement at the end of next week (gulp) Getting older isn't nice anyway but osteo arthritis is brutal. I'm looking forward to becoming "bionic woman" as my colleagues have taken to calling me and to finding a new lease of life post surgery. So, that will be me attending the SME Business Awards on crutches - How on earth will I make it onto the stage if we are announced as Winners!!!! Watch this space :)
Having travelled the best part of 6 hours for an on-site meeting with a new client in the North West (thanks evening closures on the A1 and M62, and then heavy traffic getting to York) I received an email 30 minutes before my scheduled meeting postponing the event and asking to rearrange for the following week. Fortunately I had also been in touch with other companies in the local area to offer my services of recruitment consultancy in return for a cup of Yorkshire Tea. To my delight I was taken up on the offer by the wonderful Vicki at Twisted Automotive in Thirsk. We had a great conversation lasting well over an hour about their recruitment strategies to date, plans for expansion in the UK and overseas, and how Alliance Consulting can support in these plans. In particular, attracting talent to relocate to the North East (easy for me as I am passionate about this as a proud Yorkshireman and have a proven track record of doing so) and our many years of experience recruiting in the USA. Even better, in their showroom they also have a wonderful cafe where I enjoyed a late lunch and continued to work at one of their desk spaces for the rest of the afternoon. . .

Reda's June Blog

May 2024: A Month of Milestones and Memories May has truly been an emotional roller coaster. From the high-energy excitement of our annual charity fundraising event to the serene shores of Spain, this month has been a whirlwind of activity, joy, and reflection. We kicked off May with our much-anticipated charity fundraising event, and I am thrilled to share that we raised an eyewatering £2500! The weeks leading up to the event were hectic, filled with planning, coordinating, and a fair share of last-minute adjustments. But all the hard work paid off. The day itself was nothing short of amazing. The community came together, enjoyed the festivities, and contributed generously to our cause. The success of this event has already spurred us to start planning for next year’s fundraiser, which we have scheduled for May 4th, 2025. Mark your calendars! Hot on the heels of the fundraiser, I had another significant event to prepare for: my youngest daughter's 10th birthday celebrations. How is she already in double digits? It feels like just yesterday she was taking her first steps, and now she's growing into an incredible young lady. The party was a blast, filled with laughter, games, and a lot of cake. It was a special day that reminded me how quickly time flies and how important it is to cherish these moments. After the flurry of events, we desperately needed a break. So, we took advantage of the half-term and headed to Spain for a week. With the UK weather being less than sunny, the warm Spanish sun was a welcome change. We spent our days lounging by the beach, exploring local markets, and enjoying delicious Spanish cuisine. It was a much-needed escape that allowed us to recharge and relax. Returning to everyday life after a holiday is never easy. The early morning alarms were a harsh reminder that the vacation was over. But, despite the initial struggle, it's good to be home. We are fortunate to have a cozy home and jobs we love. These everyday comforts are something to be grateful for, even if they come with early wake-up calls. May has been a month of milestones and memories, and I am excited to see what the rest of the year holds. Here’s to the upcoming summer and the extra sunshine we’re all craving!
Data published by the NHS shows that 11 million fit notes were issued in 2023 with 94 per cent of these indicating that the recipients were not fit for work. A significant portion of these were repeat fit notes issued without further medical advice. These figures suggest that almost a third of working adults are inactive. This has come to be regarded by our Government as Britain’s “sick note culture,” where workers have been unnecessarily written off from work, often on a long term basis, and placed on benefits without receiving the appropriate support and treatment to aid them in returning to work. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that benefits had become a “lifestyle choice” for some workers, resulting in a “spiralling” welfare bill. A month ago, the Prime Minister highlighted his intention to introduce a package of welfare reforms to ensure those who are fit to work are not left behind by claiming benefits. This includes individuals with mental health issues, who could be better supported by therapies or respite care rather than cash transfers. One significant consequence of this welfare reform would be an overhaul of the fit note system. The focus of fit note discussions would shift to what people can do with the right support, rather than what they can’t do. This new process would be managed by specialist health professionals instead of GPs, who would conduct objective assessments of a person’s ability to work and then provide tailored support to help them return to work. The Government indicated that they would invest £65 million in a “WorkWell” pilot plan, designed to support people in staying and progressing in work. Fifteen areas have been selected for this pilot project. The WorkWell pilot plan will involve referrals to a work & health coach for staff members who are signed off from work and considering leaving employment altogether. Referrals can be made by the worker’s GP, employer, or local service. The coach will identify the worker’s health and social barriers to employment and develop a plan to address them. This plan may include sessions with a physiotherapist, meetings with a counsellor, and consultations with a Human Resource Advisor for employment advice. Participation in the WorkWell pilot plan is expected to be voluntary, and workers can also make self-referrals. The pilot plan is anticipated to start in late October 2024, with the goal of helping businesses reduce absenteeism and improve productivity. However, the true effectiveness of the program remains to be seen - especially given its voluntary nature.
Earlier this month, Alliance Consulting's Dr. Dan Horne was interviewed by Ingrid Feuerstein for Les Echos (French financial newspaper) for a long editorial piece covering changes to the UK visa system. During this wide-ranging interview, Dan was questioned about a wide variety of changes including: * UK Student visas for overseas students * Post-Study Work visas for graduates * Salary threshold for Skilled Worker visa * Reduction in Skills Shortage List * Increased costs for sponsoring family members to join British and Settled UK residents Dan was able to provide updates on the latest developments, insights into further proposed changes, and real life examples of how these changes are impacting companies in the UK, overseas, as well as the human impact on individuals and families. We are looking forward to reading the final published article in June 2024. If you have any questions about visas and how they may impact you or your company, then contact Dan.
