May 2024: A Month of Milestones and Memories
May has truly been an emotional roller coaster. From the high-energy excitement of our annual charity fundraising event to the serene shores of Spain, this month has been a whirlwind of activity, joy, and reflection.
We kicked off May with our much-anticipated charity fundraising event, and I am thrilled to share that we raised an eyewatering £2500! The weeks leading up to the event were hectic, filled with planning, coordinating, and a fair share of last-minute adjustments. But all the hard work paid off. The day itself was nothing short of amazing. The community came together, enjoyed the festivities, and contributed generously to our cause. The success of this event has already spurred us to start planning for next year’s fundraiser, which we have scheduled for May 4th, 2025. Mark your calendars!
Hot on the heels of the fundraiser, I had another significant event to prepare for: my youngest daughter's 10th birthday celebrations. How is she already in double digits? It feels like just yesterday she was taking her first steps, and now she's growing into an incredible young lady. The party was a blast, filled with laughter, games, and a lot of cake. It was a special day that reminded me how quickly time flies and how important it is to cherish these moments.
After the flurry of events, we desperately needed a break. So, we took advantage of the half-term and headed to Spain for a week. With the UK weather being less than sunny, the warm Spanish sun was a welcome change. We spent our days lounging by the beach, exploring local markets, and enjoying delicious Spanish cuisine. It was a much-needed escape that allowed us to recharge and relax.
Returning to everyday life after a holiday is never easy. The early morning alarms were a harsh reminder that the vacation was over. But, despite the initial struggle, it's good to be home. We are fortunate to have a cozy home and jobs we love. These everyday comforts are something to be grateful for, even if they come with early wake-up calls.
May has been a month of milestones and memories, and I am excited to see what the rest of the year holds. Here’s to the upcoming summer and the extra sunshine we’re all craving!

UK "sick note" culture? - PM calls for an end
Data published by the NHS shows that 11 million fit notes were issued in 2023 with 94 per cent of these indicating that the recipients were not fit for work. A significant portion of these were repeat fit notes issued without further medical advice. These figures suggest that almost a third of working adults are inactive.
This has come to be regarded by our Government as Britain’s “sick note culture,” where workers have been unnecessarily written off from work, often on a long term basis, and placed on benefits without receiving the appropriate support and treatment to aid them in returning to work. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that benefits had become a “lifestyle choice” for some workers, resulting in a “spiralling” welfare bill.
A month ago, the Prime Minister highlighted his intention to introduce a package of welfare reforms to ensure those who are fit to work are not left behind by claiming benefits. This includes individuals with mental health issues, who could be better supported by therapies or respite care rather than cash transfers. One significant consequence of this welfare reform would be an overhaul of the fit note system. The focus of fit note discussions would shift to what people can do with the right support, rather than what they can’t do. This new process would be managed by specialist health professionals instead of GPs, who would conduct objective assessments of a person’s ability to work and then provide tailored support to help them return to work.
The Government indicated that they would invest £65 million in a “WorkWell” pilot plan, designed to support people in staying and progressing in work. Fifteen areas have been selected for this pilot project. The WorkWell pilot plan will involve referrals to a work & health coach for staff members who are signed off from work and considering leaving employment altogether. Referrals can be made by the worker’s GP, employer, or local service. The coach will identify the worker’s health and social barriers to employment and develop a plan to address them. This plan may include sessions with a physiotherapist, meetings with a counsellor, and consultations with a Human Resource Advisor for employment advice.
Participation in the WorkWell pilot plan is expected to be voluntary, and workers can also make self-referrals. The pilot plan is anticipated to start in late October 2024, with the goal of helping businesses reduce absenteeism and improve productivity. However, the true effectiveness of the program remains to be seen - especially given its voluntary nature.

Earlier this month, Alliance Consulting's Dr. Dan Horne was interviewed by Ingrid Feuerstein for Les Echos (French financial newspaper) for a long editorial piece covering changes to the UK visa system.
During this wide-ranging interview, Dan was questioned about a wide variety of changes including:
* UK Student visas for overseas students
* Post-Study Work visas for graduates
* Salary threshold for Skilled Worker visa
* Reduction in Skills Shortage List
* Increased costs for sponsoring family members to join British and Settled UK residents
Dan was able to provide updates on the latest developments, insights into further proposed changes, and real life examples of how these changes are impacting companies in the UK, overseas, as well as the human impact on individuals and families.
We are looking forward to reading the final published article in June 2024.
If you have any questions about visas and how they may impact you or your company, then contact Dan.

After the down pours and cold, gloomy weather the day before, we were blessed with sunshine on Sunday 5th May just in time for our second family fun day raising more money for our charity partner, Mental Health UK.
After waiting anxiously (having been let down last year at the last minute by one of our food vendors), our team was able to breathe a sigh of relief with the arrival of the pizza and donuts, burgers, coffee and ice cream vans as well as the fun fair. Our volunteers for the day arrived promptly to set up the stands for the children who spent the day dashing between the tea cup rides, bouncy castle and trampoline, and the crafts tables, colouring station, hair, glitter and nails tables. The football fanatics were delighted to see that we had organised a charity match and formed an orderly queue for the sign up sheets dropping their shiny pound coins into one of many money shakers whilst the less sporty were keen to share their vocal talents by belting out a few hits on the karaoke manned by resident DJ, Stuart. Meanwhile, Tricia and Jean were flat out all day selling raffle tickets as we were absolutely blown away this year with the incredible prizes we received from a number of local businesses in Bedford. The raffle table was quite literally groaning under the weight of what appeared to be hundreds of bottles of wine, prosecco and spirits which looked beautiful alongside a huge variety of vouchers for spas, golf days, afternoon teas, motor sport experiences, pub lunches, football merchandise and more.
Hundreds of people turned out for the event keen to pledge their support for Mental Health UK and after drawing the raffle, we ended a very successful day with karaoke and disco.
Counting up the day after, we were over the moon to see that we had matched the amount raised from our September fund raiser and are already close to our target for Mental Health UK with still a year to go. Heartfelt thanks to all those who attended, to our generous sponsors who provided the raffle prizes and to our wonderful volunteers who gave up their own time to help us make the day a huge success. Congratulations also to Avery Roper, aged 5 who won the colouring competition.
We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Team Alliance Consulting.

Maria's April Blog
Holidays, Awards and Fundraising
April.... what a month! There just don't seem to be enough days in the week or weeks in the month to keep up!
We've been busy this month getting to grips with some exciting new software we have purchased to assist with our Marketing and "sourcewhaling" has quickly become an accepted parlance for the Alliance Consulting team - Even our intern, Michele asks me each Wednesday whether we require him to partake in any sourcewhaling :)
We have also been hard at work finalising our sponsors list and gathering in raffle prizes as our second annual fundraiser for Mental Health UK is just around the corner on the 5th May. In the midst of this hive of activity, I was also delighted to receive an email two weeks ago from Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce advising that Alliance Consulting has been shortlisted as a Finalist under the Customer Service category for the SME Bedfordshire Business Awards. Now it's decision time.... recycle the very expensive dress I bought for the REC Awards last November or buy a new one?? Tough choice lol :)
Finally, I've been working hard to keep up my profile on our Meet the Team page by ensuring that I got in some travel time this month. I had an amazing week's holiday with my family in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and also got to return to Cairo. Seeing the pyramids again was spectacular as was meeting some of the local children and women in a mosque we visited. Off to Italy again this week end for a family celebration but the lap top will be coming with me. No doubt I will be consulting the map of the world again soon to plot my next trip and challenge my colleague, Matt Di Giorgio to his title and crown within the company - International Man of Mystery!

Fundraising for Mental Health UK
As April draws to a close and May approaches, our excitement is palpable as we gear up for a momentous occasion: our charity event on the 5th of May, 2024. Last year was a great success and we raised £2500 for Mental Health UK charity! This year we are aiming to do even better! We are diligently working behind the scenes to make this event a success, and we can't wait to share the experience with you.
Mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, yet it's often overlooked in our society. Just as we prioritize our physical health, it's imperative to pay attention to our mental and emotional wellness. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of mental health like never before, with many experiencing heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Taking care of your mental health doesn't have to be complicated. Simple practices like regular exercise, sufficient sleep, healthy eating, and mindfulness can make a world of difference. Additionally, seeking professional help when needed and fostering strong social connections are vital steps in maintaining mental wellness.
Charities like Mental Health UK play a crucial role in supporting individuals struggling with mental health issues. From providing counselling services and resources to advocating for better mental health policies, these organizations work tirelessly to create a world where everyone can access the support they need.
We invite you to join us in supporting Mental Health UK by donating to our cause. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of those in need, providing hope and healing to individuals facing mental health challenges. Scan the QR code below to make a donation and be a part of this meaningful initiative.
Finally, we extend a warm invitation to our charity event on the 5th of May. It will be a full day filled with entertainment, enlightenment, and most importantly, a shared commitment to promoting mental wellness. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for mental health support.
Save the date, spread the word, and let's come together for a cause that truly matters. See you there!

Finding Gratitude in Recovery: A Reflection on Health and Healing
This month I find myself reflecting on the journey of the past year. A year ago, an innocent afternoon of ice skating turned into a painful ordeal as I snapped my wrist. What followed was a challenging and often agonizing journey of recovery, marked by moments of frustration, pain, and dependence on others. However, amidst the difficulties, there was a profound lesson waiting to be learned – the invaluable importance of health.
Living in a rural location meant that my inability to drive during the recovery period posed significant challenges. Simple tasks like taking my children to their clubs and social events suddenly became logistical puzzles to solve. I found myself relying on the kindness of friends and family, feeling a sense of helplessness that was both humbling and unsettling. Yet, through it all, there was a silver lining – a newfound appreciation for the fragility and resilience of the human body.
As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, I embarked on a journey of healing. Physical therapy sessions became a regular part of my routine, each one inching me closer to recovery. There were setbacks along the way, moments where doubt crept in and frustration threatened to overwhelm me. Yet, through perseverance and determination, I slowly but surely began to regain mobility and strength in my wrist.
And now, a year on, I find myself in a place of profound gratitude. Gratitude for the healing that has taken place, for the pain that has subsided, and for the lessons learned along the way. I am thankful for the support of loved ones who stood by me during the difficult moments, offering encouragement and assistance when I needed it most. But above all, I am grateful for the gift of health – a precious commodity that is often taken for granted until it is compromised.
Health, they say, is wealth – a sentiment that rings truer now more than ever. In a world where we are constantly striving for success, chasing after material possessions and societal recognition, it is easy to lose sight of what truly matters. We prioritize career advancement, financial stability, and material wealth, often at the expense of our own well-being. Yet, in moments of adversity, when our health is threatened, we are reminded of its intrinsic value – a value that far outweighs any material possession.
So as I look back on the trials of the past year, I am reminded of the importance of cherishing our health. It is a gift that cannot be bought or earned through worldly pursuits, but rather, one that must be nurtured and protected at all costs. And so, as February comes to a close, I am filled with a renewed sense of gratitude for the blessing of health. For in the end, it is health that truly is our greatest wealth.

The Big 4-0!
As I sit here, penning down my thoughts on the brink of turning 40 this month, I find myself enveloped in a whirlwind of emotions. It's a milestone, they say, one that demands reflection, introspection, and perhaps a touch of nostalgia. For me, it's not just about the number; it's about the journey—the peaks and valleys, the laughter and tears—that have shaped me into who I am today.
Turning 40 isn't something that fills me with dread or apprehension. No, it's more of a gentle reminder that time is a relentless river, ever-flowing, carrying us along its currents. It's a marker of the passage of time, a moment to pause and take stock of all that has transpired.
As I look back over the years, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the love of family and friends that has sustained me through the toughest of times. Gratitude for the opportunities that have come my way, allowing me to grow, learn, and evolve. Gratitude for the simple joys that sprinkle colour into the canvas of my life.
But amidst the gratitude, there are also memories of hardship. The challenges that tested my resilience, the setbacks that threatened to derail me. They say that adversity builds character, and I can attest to the truth of that statement. Each hurdle, each obstacle, has served as a stepping stone, propelling me forward on this journey of self-discovery.
And now, as I stand on the threshold of a new decade, I find myself filled with a quiet confidence. I've weathered storms and danced in the sunlight. I've stumbled and fallen, only to rise again, stronger and more determined than before. Age is just a number, they say, and I couldn't agree more. What truly matters is how we feel inside, how we embrace the wisdom gleaned from our experiences.
So here's to 40—to the laughter and the tears, the triumphs and the trials. Here's to embracing each moment with open arms, knowing that every twist and turn has led us to this point. Here's to the journey, with all its twists and turns, its joys and sorrows. And most importantly, here's to the unwavering belief that the best is yet to come.

We were delighted this week to receive the news that our entry under the category, Service Excellence was successful and we have been short listed as a Finalist .
The SME Bedfordshire Business Awards are in their 7th year of celebrating the success of businesses in the local area and are made up of 22 categories. All entries are judged by a panel comprised of up to four individuals who are supporters of the category.
Alliance Consulting has carved a reputation over the course of two decades establishing itself not only as a leader in the provision of best in class recruitment solutions but also for the level of service we provide to our clients and candidates.
Listed below are just a handful of the testimonials we are proud to have received in recent years:
"Having dealt with many recruiters in my time, I can confidently say Maria is the most competent, professional and personable I have I encountered. Maria has extensive industry knowledge, great experience and a wealth of contacts which make her a trusted and respected advisor in my industry ( Cybersecurity) Throughout the recruitment process she provided me with very valuable feedback and insights which made a huge difference. I am truly grateful as she helped me get a great job at an amazing company"
"At my most critical moment, Dan Horne played a very important role in my career journey, enabling me to open a new page and I had the chance to join the talented team of Exveritas as a Senior Electrical and Electronic Product Certification Engineer. Dan's support was not limited to just providing new job role support, he also offered unique, excellent and professional support to help me find a home to rent while moving into my new workplace. It was an extraordinary privilege to work with Dan because of his exceptional problem-solving skills, professionalism, and determination that ultimately led to successful results. Thank you for your support, Dan and I wish you continued success."
"Maria Mazzei and her team have helped us out tremendously and she's proven herself to be an excellent partner who buckles down to get done what needs to get done, and fast! She is honest with her capabilities and will tell you if something is not in her wheelhouse, which isn't much, but she can deliver what she promises. It's amazing to work with her and I see her as a trusted partner and valued friend. High-energy, trustworthy, honest, humble and fair are good words to describe her and I look forward to a long-term future partnership. THANK YOU! :) Until next time!!"
"Transparent, go-getter, creative, out of the box & partnership are terms that I would use to describe Maria and her way of approaching recruitment. Maria was recommended to me by my colleagues in the UK. She helped us in finding the right candidates for difficult to fill positions such as Sales and Project Engineers & Service Technicians for our locations in the Netherlands and Belgium. She really helps throughout the entire recruitment process and challenges and gives advice on the best approach. Since she first wants to know the company she recruits for, she can give candidates a very good briefing and explanation of what Munters does, how we work and what we are looking for. A true partnership and extension of our company and hope to continue working together for a long time to come!"
Having been a Finalist in 2023 at the REC Industry Awards for a similar award "Client Transformation through outstanding Recruitment Services delivered" we are exceptionally proud to have been recognised again by the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce. We look forward to attending the Awards Ceremony at Bedford Corn Exchange on 4th July.

Add Native Language Skills for Technical Sales to the Shortage Occupation List
Language skills are vital in a world in which increasing numbers of businesses have a global presence and communicate in multiple languages. The UK is very much a hot spot for these types of companies and have hubs here from which they manage a vast number of their customers across many countries. These employers require multilingual staff, ideally native speakers of languages including French, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese to name but a few.
Since 2019, the UK has seen a steep decrease in EU nationals able to look for work in the UK with Brexit meaning a clampdown on free movement from the EU. In the first three quarters of 2023, 11,600 EU citizens were turned away at the border in comparison to 2,200 in 2019. At the same time, reports published showed that there has been a decrease in language learning skills in schools.
With Linked In data from this month demonstrating more 2,000 roles currently open in the UK for German speakers, the same for French and Mandarin and 1,000 for Italian, it is apparent that fears from employers since 2019 that a shortfall for these skills would emerge were certainly justified.
Whilst the Government has acknowledged that language skills are “increasingly important” for business, trade and competitiveness in the global marketplace and vital for many UK employers, they are yet to take steps to find a workable solution.
Alliance Consulting has submitted a petition to the Government requesting the inclusion of I.T/Technical Sales staff to the shortage occupation list.
Please show your support by following the link below and adding your signature. Thank you.
